What to Consider When Starting a Web Site

You may find it hard to believe, but there are a lot of businesses out there that have yet to build an online presence. These businesses should really reconsider this for a plethora of reasons.

Despite all of the different marketing channels you have available to you online, your site is the most important one. It all leads to your site, particularly if you are selling goods from it. When a potential customer visits your site, they will make the decision whether or not they want to do business with you, and if it unprofessional looking, the chances of them choosing to do so will be that much slimmer.

There are many, many factors to consider when creating your site, here are the 15 most popular

  1. Favicon
  2. Titles and Meta Data
  3. Cross-Browser Checks
  4. Proofread
  5. Links
  6. Functionality Check
  7. Graceful Degradation
  8. Validation
  9. RSS Link
  10. Analytics
  11. Sitemap
  12. Defensive Design
  13. Optimize
  14. Back Up
  15. Print Style Sheet

Another pretty important element that I've discussed before is the domain name. Generally, the most effective domain names are easy to remember, not too long, easy to spell, relevant to the business, and reflect the brand.

Design should be a priority though. Think usability above all else. Accessibility should be on the agenda as well.

Re-Branding your Business

Sometimes when business isn't going as well as planned, it pays to consider changing your image. Making your business seem fresh in the public eye can be huge for attracting new customers. Share your rebranding experiences.

The important thing to remember when trying this approach however, is to not let down your current customers. They are after all the ones keeping you in business in the first place.

If you choose to rebrand, make sure to include their best interests unless you are prepared to lose them. It's one thing if you can afford to start over again from scratch, but unfortunately, many small business owners do not have this luxury.

The following are 7 common mistakes that people often make when trying to re-brand:

  1. Clinging to History
  2. Thinking the brand is limited to the logo, stationery and corporate colors
  3. Navigating without a plan
  4. Not leveraging existing brand equity and goodwill
  5. Not walking in your customer's shoes
  6. Believing rebranding costs too much
  7. Bypassing the basics.

Be sure it's really what you want to do. Take it slow and consider expanding too. This can often lead to more success without losing the brand you have established.

Don't stop there either. This is a big step for your business and you should do as much research as possible before taking it. Look at other companies that have done it. Try to figure out what made them successful or caused them to fail.

If rebranding is something you are considering, we urge you to to contact us before making any drastic decisions.
